Help wanted:
Help the Aged (Canada) is a Registered Charity Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) with a Federal Not-for-Profit Corporation Charter. We are based in Ottawa. We have a mandate to provide for support programs and projects for Older Persons within Canada and overseas. We work with a wide range of partners – governments, corporations and other NGO’s in delivery of programs and projects.
Even with thirty years experience, we are a small organization now looking to build our acquired abilities and expand our reach into more communities. Given the restraint imposed by our very generous Canadian donors with regard to our “overhead” costs, we seek a cadre of experienced volunteers to work with our staff to enable further growth within our Corporate Plan. We would hope those younger “Older Persons” in our community, those who are retired and have an interest and time, would step up to the plate and help us address the needs of our peers who may perhaps not be as fortunate as ourselves.
In Ottawa, we need:
- bookkeepers
- project managers and
- program managers
for existing programs and projects as well as people able to research, develop and implement new programs and projects. Computer-user expertise within a Windows/Office environment and high-speed internet access at home is important. Within our Canadian communities we seek individuals and groups interested in or already working in the provision of support to Older Persons in need, who wish to identify with and become a part of a national organization addressing the issues of Older Persons. We already have four such groups, two in Ottawa, one in Québec City and one in Mont Laurier, Québec. As a part of a national organization, the community groups will be able to access and share information and other resources, to lessen the local “overheads” and focus more on what we all cherish – delivery of services and support.
Help the Aged (Canada) (aka HTAC) uses the definition of “Older Persons” as that presented by the United Nations in their document “United Nations Principles for Older Persons”. We have a web site at http://www.helptheaged.ca which has extensive information including full exposure of our financial situation.
Your questions are always welcome at info@helptheaged.ca

ROTIS Volunteers needed:
We are looking for volunteers to raise public awareness for our Reaching Out to Isolated Seniors (ROTIS) program. The ROTIS volunteer committee is responsible for visiting businesses that see their senior clientele on a regular basis such as banks, pharmacies and grocery stores. The staff at these locations may be able to assist their elderly customers in need of social and/or medical support. Our volunteers are in charge of creating awareness for employees of local businesses of the ROTIS phone number and how it can be used to help older people in their community. If you enjoy giving presentations and working with the public then this is a great opportunity. The committee also participates in local kiosks to inform the general public about our program.
For more information, visit the ROTIS website at www.isolatedseniors.ca.
Volunteers needed:
We are currently recruiting individuals who would be interested in accepting management responsibilities as volunteers with Help the Aged in the following areas:
- Help to develop and coordinate a public awareness program to inform Canadians of our goals and objectives and to encourage financial support of our ongoing programs in developing countries and in Canada. This program will consist of:
- presentations/kiosks held at service clubs, community associations, churches, senior citizen organizations, etc
- publicity through magazine and newspaper articles
- publicity through radio and television announcements (PSA’s) and interviews.
To expand our current donation-in-kind program in Ottawa and Toronto.
We have a successful program of this type in Montreal where a retired orthopaedic surgeon and a retired prosthetist regularly contact Montreal area hospitals and clinics for donations of usable medical equipment and supplies. Annually we normally ship equipment and supplies valued at $500,000 to Haiti and Ghana to support our primary health care programs.
- Become members of our fundraising committee to develop new programs and approaches which would increase our profile and improve support for our programs.
- Prepare mailing lists of donation committee representatives from various companies (ex. Shopper’s Drug Mart, Canadian Tire, Home Depot) who may be interested in supporting Help the Aged programs.
- Promote our Adopt-A-Gran sponsorship program through various media, service and community organizations in order to increase public support for this program.
- Research grant opportunities from foundations and corporations in Canada, the United States, Europe and Japan and assist with grant proposals to support ongoing Help the Aged projects in developing countries.
- Research and apply for government grants to support and expand our domestic programs to assist the elderly poor (Health Canada, HRSDC, Seniors Secretariat, etc).
