Our Programs in Developing CountriesHelp the Aged works in 11 countries worldwide and supports a variety of programs to benefit destitute elderly in developing countries. All donations for overseas projects are tripled by matching grants from the Canadian International Development Agency and the Alberta Wild Rose Foundation. (excluding the Adopt-A-Gran sponsorship program) Adopt-A-Gran sponsorship programCurrently, over 1,000 elderly people in Jamaica, India, Ghana, Dominica, Kenya, Haiti, Sri Lanka, and the Philipines are provided with food, shelter, clothing, medical care as well as hope and dignity for $27 a month. Sponsors are kept up-to-date and sent letters and photos of their adopted Gran. HaitiA new three year project to assist ten of Haiti’s poorest communities has just been introduced by Help the Aged. KenyaThe Matangwe district of the Nyanza Province has the highest poverty rate in all of Kenya. It is estimated that 450 elderly women are completely responsible in this district for over 1,600 orphans who have lost their parents because of HIV/AIDS. This project will provide them with the health and income generation support that they require to support themselves and their grandchildren. The CongoHelp the Aged has been working in the Democratic Republic of Congo with the Communauté Evangélique de l’Ubangi-Mongola since 1996. Together with assistance from the Canadian International Development Agency, they are helping restore full health care services to three large hospitals and 70 community health clinics. Equateur Region, Congo: One of the projects is in the province of Equateur where we have been working since 1996. We will be focusing on improvements to three hospitals (Karawa, Loko and Bokada) serving a population of 400,000. We will also be involved in community health programs including the training of 38 regional health leaders. West Kasai Region, Congo: To combat malnutrition and starvation which is prevalent in this area, this new two year project is focusing on agricultural production with 30,000 farmers receiving our direct support through approximately 1,000 local farming associations. |
