Aricine is 65 years old and lives in Bombardopolis. She is single and has two daughters. Aricine also has 3 brothers and 2 sisters. They all live in extreme poverty and are unable to assist Aricine. Aricine's religion is Catholic and she speaks Créole. She can not read or write. Aricine is very weak and unable to work. She has no source of income and must rely on the Parish Council for assistance. With no pension system in Haiti, day to day life is a constant struggle.

Sara Damji: Helping Isolated Seniors

Sara_Damji"I have lived in Ottawa several weeks now, and I still haven't visited Parliament!" laughs Sara Damji, the new Public Education and Communications Officer for Reaching Out To Isolated Seniors (ROTIS), a program that identifies and supports isolated seniors. After earning a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Integrative Biology and Health Studies from the University of Toronto, she eagerly accepted the 24-week long internship that brought her to Ottawa from her native Kitchener.

Caroline_MarshallEarlier this year, Caroline Marshall was online researching internship opportunities sponsored by CIDA when she discovered the Help the Aged website and the National Career Focus Internship program. Fast forward, and Caroline has just completed her third month as a project officer in the Family and Community Health Department of Ottawa Public Health. Since she plans to pursue a career in public health, this turned out to be a perfect match.

Father Augustin Cholet Visit to Canada

Father Augustin Cholet from Bombardopolis, Haiti was in Canada for three weeks in September to raise awareness about the state of Haiti. He visited Mont Laurier and Saint Donat in Quebec and Prince Albert in Saskatchewan where he delivered a number of presentations about his ongoing work in Haiti.

When entering Kenya's capital city of Nairobi, it looks very much like a metropolitan urban city with paved roads, tall buildings, people rushing each and everyway and traffic building up in the streets. Just the population within Nairobi has grown from half a million to three million in the past half a century. However, just outside of Nairobi is a very different story. Rural areas in Kenya are struggling to survive with 58.3% of Kenya's 32 million population living on less then $2 a day. Kenya ranks 148th out of 177 countries in the United Nations Development Programme's Human Development Index, which measures a country's development according to their life expectancy, educational attainment and standard of living.
