Adopt-A-Gran: Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a small island off the southern coast of India, just north of the equator.

Its land area is 65,610 sq. km. The geographic features of the island consist of a mountainous mass surrounded by broad plains. The island, though small, is irrigated by 16 rivers. There are also many small waterfalls, which are very picturesque.

In the lowlands, the climate is typically tropical with an average temperature of 27 C. In the higher elevations it is cool, with temperatures going down to 16 C. Here the poor are very badly off as they need warm clothing and shelter.

Agriculture is the main occupation of the people, and rice is the main food crop. Tea, rubber and coconut are grown extensively, and these are exported. Cocoa and spices are also important crops. Sri Lanka has been famous for its precious stones since the days of King Solomon.
