He has been living with his son for the last year. He spends his days seated as he is too sick to do much. Sponsorship for Hertilus Maïse will ensure that he receives food, clothing and medical attention when necessary. More importantly, it will show him that someone voluntarily cares about his situation. Haiti is acknowledged as the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere and one of the least developed in the world. Only 20% of the land is arable, while 70% of Haitians are involved in agriculture. A majority of Haitians are illiterate and employment is 50%. Many Haitians do not eat a meal everyday and the elderly are the last in line when everyone in a household is hungry. A program of support for the elderly poor in the Bombardopolis area of Haiti was started in 2005 by Father Rodolphe Balthazar, of St Francois Assisi Catholic Church. It is now run by Father Cholet and the Parish Council. .
